Arthroscopy is a type of minimally invasive surgical technique that utilizes a closed circuit TV and camera to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside of a joint. Because the surgeon can see directly inside the joint using a video camera, smaller incisions are required.

Compared to traditional open surgery, incision sizes for arthroscopic surgery are relatively small – typically one centimeter wide for each incision. These small incisions account for the main benefits of minimally invasive surgery: less scaring and less blood loss, as well as quicker recovery time.
Arthroscopic Surgery Explained
During an arthroscopic procedure, the orthopedic surgeon will make a small incision in the area of the joint on the patient’s skin and insert a pencil-sized instrument containing a camera and lighting system. This device allows the surgeon to see into the joint without having to make a large incision. Electronic pictures of the joint are taken and saved in the patient's chart to for reference and documentation of what was seen during surgery.
